It was remastered by Bill Inglot and Dan Hersch. I decided to pull out and play a RBCD of Excitable Boy on Rhino Records from 2007 for comparison against the SACD. To my ears, the resulting sound seemed somewhat dull and missed some of the inherent "energy" of the music. However, it was the second issue that was problematic: the upper range was lacking an adequate bright tone. First, the bass sounded strong and exaggerated that I rectified by a reduction of -3.5db on my subwoofer (and I do not recall ever having to adjust bass on a Hoffman disc). There is very good clarity and detail in both the vocals and instruments that can be described as very smooth and well balanced.īut it became evident almost immediately that something was not quite right in my listening experience. The soundstage is excellent and very broad. Hoffman favours and has a well deserved reputation. I will lead off by saying the SACD has a warm analogue sound that Mr. So, I had high expectations for this SACD release mastered by Steve Hoffman. I have several of his records on CD but Excitable Boy is my favourite. This album, for me, is a bunch of wonderful songs with great melodies and, of course those often quirky, cynical lyrics that only Warren Zevon could write. All involved were arguably at their creative peak, from the production of Jackson Browne and Waddy Wachtel, to the stella group of musicians and back up singers.Linda Ronstadt, Jennifer Warnes, Karla Bonoff, Russell Kunkel, John McVie, Mick Fleetwood, Jeff Porcaro, Rick would be easier to name those in Los Angeles who aren't on the recording. The personal involved ensured that this collection would stand the test of time. It was easy to see why Jackson Browne was his mentor and Linda Ronstadt his patron angel. Jackson Browne once called Zevon "the first and foremost proponent of song noir." Excitable Boy threw in a mix of werewolves, mercenaries, drug abusers and paranoid spoiled brats, yet while frequently offering exceptional tenderness and insight. With this 1978 LP, Warren Zevon stepped forward as something of the dark prince of California. The album announced he was one of the most striking talents to emerge from the Los Angeles soft rock singer/songwriter community. Warren Zevon's Excitable Boy, includes the hit "Werewolves of London" and it's the record that brought Zevon to commercial attention and remains the best-selling album of his career.
